Of the 14 recommended sites, one belonged to the prefecture of Kumamoto. The only heritage site in Kumamoto was, as it is well known, the village of Sakitsu in Amakusa, which also included the catholic church of Sakitsu (1934). Of the 14 sites of the recommended World Cultural Heritage sites, 5 churches, including the church of Sakitsu, were built by TETSUKAWA Yosuke (1879-1976), an excellent talent in the history of modern Japanese architecture. The catholic church of Tetori, located in the city of Kumamoto, was also built by Yosuke, known as the “Master Carpenter Architect”, in 1928, when father Bois was active. About this church, however, there are  only very simple and approximate descriptions found in commemorative publications of the church of Tetori and of the diocese of Fukuoka, besides a book focused only on that church. There is no reference to the first church, of which we know neither the designer nor the builder. Therefore, in this report I have sought to clarify, with the help of new materials, the process from the foundation of the church in Tetori to the construction of the two churches, paying special attention to the early one. Then, on the basis of the survey of the churches built by Yosuke, I have made my observation, both on that group of buildings and on Yosuke himself, trying to clarify the position and significance of the second church in his career as a “Master Carpenter Architect”.
