We can see such popular beliefs in Japan on the same level as those of Catholicism. Those beliefs are expressions of people's feelings and, if we refer to Lourdes grottoes, they are built all over the world, including Japan, to support the faith in the Virgin Mary. Lourdes grottoes in Japan are constructed in many Catholic churches, convents and educational facilities. Those architectural works illustrate an important Christian popular belief. However, it has not been clarified how and why those grottoes were built, and their characteristics have not been studied in detail. So in this paper I have explained as thoroughly as possible that Lourdes grottoes became necessary in the Meiji Era, if we take into account the conditions created by the second missionary work by the Paris Foreign Missions Society in Japan, the 19th-century visions of the Virgin Mary in Europe, the diffusion of medals of the apparition among believers, and of the publications about Lourdes in the same period.
