The inclusion of conversation strategies within these curricula is based on\r\nthe theory that strategic competence is an integral part of communicative competence. It is\r\nbelieved that communication strategies perform an important function in the development\r\nof strategic competence, and therefore the development of a learner’s overall\r\ncommunicative competence (Canale and Swain, 1980). A survey was used to gather data\r\npertaining to students’ knowledge and opinion of conversation strategies that were taught\r\nin their EC courses. Test transcripts were analyzed for the presence of conversation\r\nstrategies in use by the students. Data analysis showed a generally positive opinion on the\r\ninclusion of strategies in the course, as well as their usefulness in spoken conversation.
